Global System for Mobile Communications

Global System for Mobile Communications

Global System for Mobile Communications & It's Purpose:

GSM is a service which all handsets and mobile phones use to allow them to send text messages to each phone, make phone calls between phones, forward messages or phone calls and recieve and send delivery reports. Although the information back from the delivery report is quite basic along with other GSM messages recieved like credit checks and requirement for a top up, they are still the only way of obtaining them as they need GSM in place.

Features:
  • Provides network coverage for SMS messages
  • Allows phone calls to be made
  • Calls can be forwarded
  • Delivery Reports
  • Record of Sent Messages
Functions:
  • Text Messages can be sent from phone to phone
  • Phone calls can be made
  • Used by every network for mobiles
  • Allows more abilities like forwarding calls and such
Limitations:
  • N/A
  • Used widely with all network services

Evaluation:

GSM is a needed service for all phones as without it, it would not be possible to send standard SMS, MMS or make phone calls across the network of the phone. Although they're more advanced ways in which messages can be sent such as across the Internet, like MSN and skype however not all phones can support this feature.
