Personal Data Assistants

PDA - Personal Data Assistant

What a PDA is and what it does?

PDA is a mobile device where you can input data whilst on the move; this could be such information as a date you need to do something or some notes on something your viewing or watching. You can also save images & needed files for you to use on the move. They are able to connect to other components VIA USB and sync with online applications and software such as Microsoft.

  • Notes taking and for e-books
  • Programs for software assistance such as spelling and dictionaries
  • Music Player

  • Connect to a computer via USB
  • Connects to the internet
  • Download and upload files
  • Outputs MP3 sounds

Limitations:
  • Can be quite simple with now-day computing software
  • Mobile phones are in competition with what these provide
  • Can be quite costly
  • Firmware and hardware support is limited
  • Computer needed to provide updates most of the time

Evaluation:

PDA’s lack in the terms of key security meaning that they can be quite prone to having information stolen from which could be quite sensitive. Although means are being made to stop this with applications creating better security they are still vulnerable to being attacked for the information they have on them. Other limitations include the software AvantGo which is linked to every PDA meaning that the page on the PDA will show as unavailable.

Alongside this with the advancements of smart phones and ordinary hand held devices the need for such systems is slowly becoming redundant as technologies we already have provide everything that is needed within a computer system such as a hand held device/mobile phone. PDA's are more useful in job roles where continuous quick note taking on the move needs to be taken and stored without any hassle, however for anything else these can be seen as quite unnecessary to have on them,
