Linux Operating Systems

Linux operating system for computers

Linux systems and what they provide and offer?

Linux operating systems are free ware and are normally distributed through downloads and or installation discs. These operating systems are designed by smaller companies which gain money through advertisements and other means, as the operating system is free it has limitations compared to others such as Windows and Mac. Linux offers similar functionality and features to other operating systems and allows for software and games to be downloaded however not all games can be due to their design platforms. Most games are designed for Windows or Mac and Linux is normally not developed due to its basic functionality and Java based platform. Most games that are designed are Java based as the operating system itself is Java developed meaning that when games are designed on for other platforms miss out Linux as it means an entire new way of programming & development to get the game to work on this platform.

I will be looking at the features and functions which Linux systems provides in terms of gaming and how the system is used to install games, develop them and how they are played.

Linux Features:
  1. Java based games are fully compatible with Linux systems
  2. Games can be installed and configured if they're Linux based
  3. Downloads and updates can be done through the operating system
  4. Additional content can be added through downloads or storage medias
  5. Other players can be connected to through the Internet
  6. Drivers can be updated through the Internet
Linux Functions:
  1. Peripherals can be added such as controller and other interface devices
  2. Added content can be installed through the operating system
  3. High definition graphics can be viewed
  4. High definition audio can be outputted
  5. Internet based applications for games can be run on Linux
  6. Free games can be installed through their library of games
Linux Evaluation:

Overall Linux systems are useful for a simple and reliable way to have a operating system on a PC system, however they are many drawbacks in terms of functionality and features they can provide. The features are limited in terms of offering support and user friendliness when installing new games, playing them or running additional software. Functionality is also limited when it comes to adding additional peripherals to the computer like a windows Xbox controller, blue-tooth devices and other controllers to play games with, these are all limited and in some cases cannot be use due to the device drivers not being designed for Linux systems.
