Limitations:
- Yellow Light of death due to hardware issues in the latter consoles
- Game updates and system updates took many hours
- PlayStation Network was hacked and credentials were compromised
- Lead to decline in sales and faith in the company which lost them millions in profits
- Initial Hard Drive Issues with updates being large and HDD's small
- Online game play can be dramatically slowed down due to servers not being able to handle the mass amount of players
- Caused as the PSN is free to access allowing everyone to go online
- Built in browser takes up needy space on the console in terms of power consumption & processing power
Evaluation:
Since 2006 PlayStation has had many drawbacks and good points in correlation to the other systems it was put against, for example the console was released after the Xbox 360, making it prime competition for the console. This lead to a increase in demand and anticipation for the PlayStation 3 to be a better and more advanced system on the market at the time, however it had some issues that other consoles had the upper hand about. For example when the PlayStation was first released, the HDD space was insufficient for the 'hardcore gamers' wanting to play and complete as many games as they could, meaning constant updates & changes were what they wanted. This meant that due to the low space the console offered the large and time consuming updates became more and drawback rather than a upgrade, as people started to avoid them & leave them out instead, which meant they couldn't play online.
However PlayStation was faced with another problem when the consoles were released which was the yellow light of death, which was down to hardware malfunctions and problems. This problem was slowly interlinked with the Red Ring of Death that Xbox faced however was less severe as the problem only started to consist 2 years after the models creation, which was a longer period then the first 2 months Xbox had the issues. However due to these problem different models of the console was released the same as the Xbox, with the slim being released which included a Hard drive upgrade and some hardware changes along with the newest software already installed, this made a small breakthrough and sorting the YLOD however, some issues still persisted although these were down to simple faults and errors out of their control.
Overall I find that the PlayStation has been a successful console over the passed 6 years to date with its solid build and style which would be an agreeable statement until what happened late last year with the PlayStation Network being hacked and several thousands of peoples credentials leaked and stolen. This was a devastating blow to the company and lead to thousand of console call backs and sales from people, this detrimental effect cost the company millions & meant that the companies position and name was in compromise. The PlayStation Network was eventually deemed as safe a month after the attacks and players were able to access online features once again, but due to this the name of PlayStation has been severely damaged.
