Graphical Processing In Consoles

In consoles GPU's are the main hardware for the system, as they are dedicated gaming systems, this means that they need a fast GPU & CPU in coalition. I will address the GPU hardware which the Xbox 360 & PlayStation 3 use within the system.

Xbox 360 Graphics Processor:

The xbox 360 uses a Nvidia designed card which was called the Xenos, which was implemented into all the Xbox 360 consoles, the specifications are:

  • 500 Mhz Processing Power
  • 96 billion shader operations per second
  • 16 filtered samples per clock
  • 8 Render Output Units
  • 105 million transistors
  • 48 shader vector processors

PlayStation 3 Graphics Processor:

The PlayStation 3 uses a Nvidia G70 which is clocked at 550 Mhz & uses 256 MB GDDR3 RAM which is clocked at 700 Mhz. The specification of the graphics card is:
  • 550 Mhz Processing Power
  • 256 MB GDDR3 RAM
  • 90nm reduced to 45nm
  • 1.4 Ghz transmission rate
  • Memory Interface: 128-bits
  • Memory Bandwidth: 12.8 GB/s
  • Fill Rate: 3.6 GPixel/s and 4.8 GTexel/s
  • Passively cooled, or Small Heatsink and Fan
  • Memory Type: DDR2
